Winter Preparations: Secluding In Civilization

Writer's picture: Ethan BertiniEthan Bertini

Here we are; pondering, dreaming, fantasizing of the beauty of seclusion in wilderness. The absence of humans. The wonders the wind carries through clutters of branches. The ability to disappear, as the world around you teems with life on every scale imaginable.

Often we take for granted that the beauty we look for in seclusion presents glimpses of wild wherever we go. Whether it be a squirrel on a park bench, a jay on a rooftop, or maybe a mule deer nestled under the panes of a house window.

It makes me think of the possibilities to merge - to live not with, but among the wild - properly. To consider that maybe our value as a race, as a human, may not necessarily be greater than theirs.

This finch gave me a glimpse of this outside the union on my college campus; while preparing for the much more rugged world it faces in the winter, as it soaks up every little grain of sugar in these crab apples.

That's Wild.

That's what we said too. That's Wild Outdoors is founded on the experiences of two enthusiasts who simply cannot get enough; of dreamers, who share a bond through nature and expression; and of storytellers, who can't let go of a creative obsession. Whether separated by a rod's length of chalky water, or by a mountain range that spans across state borders; together, we share a commitment to the stories that just need to be told.
